St. Maarten – Wendell Laurence is the recipient of the first President of Parliament Award. The 23-year-old received his reward during a reception at the Sundial School after the opening of the parliamentary year by Governor Drs. Eugène Holiday for parliament president Drs. Gracita Arrindell.

Laurence, a graduate from the Sundial School, started working in the restaurant business at the age of 17. Six years later, after a stint at La Gondola in Cupecoy, he is now the head chef of the Izi Restaurant in Simpson Bay.

Arrindell considers Laurence a role model for other youngsters on the island. Izi Restaurant owner David Foini was at hand to witness the honors the president of parliament bestowed on his young head chef.

Arrindell said that Laurence has already some impressive accomplishments to his name. “On Valentine’s Day he effortlessly served a party of 275 people,” she said.
