Ivo Opstelten to Minister Richardson: “Success with your conscience”

WILLEMSTAD / GREAT BAY – During the Four Countries consultation of the ministers of justice in Curacao on Wednesday a curious incident took place that involved the Dutch Minister Ivo Opstelten and St. Maarten’s Minister Dennis Richardson.

Anneke Polak, a reporter for Antilliaans Dagblad and Caribisch Netwerk noted that, while Curacao’s Minister Nelson Navarro was speaking during a press conference, Richardson handed a letter to Opstelten, who looked at it, shook his head, said he would not sign it and returned the letter.

When Polak asked Opstelten about the letter’s content he said that this was “something between us and it will stay that way.”

That was not the end of it, Polka noted: “While the press conference was still underway, Opstelten left because he had to catch his plane. He shook hands with Richardson and said: Success with your conscience. To which Richardson replied: My conscience is clean.”

When Polak asked Richardson for clarification, he just said that “the Netherlands had a wish towards St. Maarten” without saying what it was all about. “He said he would go to the Netherlands one of these days and that he will follow up on the topic then.”

Today sent Minister Richardson an email with pertinent questions about these incidents, but so far we have not received an answer.
