St.Maarten- The fierce criticism Christian Party leader Wycliffe Smith has in store for incumbent members of parliament (see our opinion page: Be wary of promises) will not make him any friends, even though his observations are not without merit.
While Smith points out the basic rules of the game, another political newcomer, Lisa Alexander, has taken the initiative to distribute copies of the country’s constitution.
Both the observations of Smith and the initiative of Alexander fit in the same basket. They are attempts to make the electorate aware of the rules, the rights and responsibilities and the pitfalls that are ahead of us on the road to the next elections.
Will we then have a better informed electorate come September 26? That depends. Sending a message is one thing but its effect depends almost entirely on how its targets absorb it.
