Indian community celebrates Republic Day

Indian colorSt. Maarten – The Indian community celebrated Republic Day at the Princess Port de Plaisance pavilion on Saturday evening. January 26 commemorates the day India’s constitution became effective in 1950.It replaced the government of India Act of 1935.

Republic Day is one of the three national holidays on the Indian calendar. The celebrations at Port de Plaisance feature traditional East Indian dance performances and cultural dances related to St. Maarten.

Prime Minister Wescot-Williams attended the celebration where she lit a candle to officially open the event. She congratulated the Indian community with the celebration of their Republic Day.
