In formation-report to Governor Holiday: Formateur Heyliger laments violation of privacy

St. Maarten – “It is lamentable that the privacy protection that is required under the law has been seriously compromised,” formateur and UP-leader Theo Heyliger wrote in his report to Governor Drs. Eugène Holiday on Tuesday.

Heyliger referred with this remark to “hearsay and unsubstantiated allegations” that have crept into the screening process of the candidates for a post in the new cabinet.

“During the vetting process many questions were posed, questionnaires were completed, private information of candidates was requested and provided, and candidates were required to provide evidence that they resigned from functions they held and that they distanced themselves from commercial activities.”

The formateur reported to the governor that “all the candidates answered all the questions” and that they took “the necessary and required steps to my full satisfaction and even went beyond what is legally required.”

Furthermore, Heyliger noted in his report: “The candidates have all expressed their willingness and their availability to provide any additional information to reporting bodies and to clarify any questions there might be. None of the reporting bodies made use of this opportunity.”

Heyliger points out in his report that by law a new government has to be installed the latest three months after the elections. That term expired on November 29.

“The coalition to support the government has changed several times since the election was held,” the one-page report states. “Insufficient time remains now to fully address the matters raised by the reporting bodies and to present a cabinet of seven ministers. In view of this I have elected to present a cabinet of five members at this time and to pursue the appointment of the remaining ministers as soon as possible thereafter.”
