“Important to have similar legislation throughout Kingdom”

St. Maarten – It is important for the inheritance and legacy-legislation in St. Maarten to be similar to that in the Netherlands. Henry Parisius, president of the notary association made this clear in a meeting with the central committee of parliament yesterday afternoon.
“We favor similar legislation throughout the Kingdom,” Parisius said. “That is because in practice we always go back to handbooks and to Dutch case-law. Also, cases end up at the same Supreme Court in The Hague. If the islands had different laws it would be increasingly difficult for professionals to fall back on handbooks and case-law.”
Parliamentarians had few questions for the notaries, and the meeting concluded within three quarters of an hour.
