St. Maarten – In their renewed effort to stem the flow of violence among the youths on the island, the bikeathon organized by  the  Drug Abuse Resistance Education, D.A.R.E,  attracted scores of participants, some as young as five years old.

The event which was held in a controlled environment started at the police station in Philipsburg and concluded at Port de Plaisance. “We are organizing activities that will keep them in line, but that can only be done under the guidance of the police bicycle brigade and with the assistance of members of the Zero Tolerance group,” officer Sprott said.

On arrival at the destination, the participants received refreshments before taking part in fun events. Sprott said that D.A.R.E, which was formed some eight years ago and is in the process of raising funds.

Adults were asked to pay a small fee of $5, but for the kids the event was free. To maximize the fund raising D.A.R.E rented out bikes to participants who did not have one.
