St. Maarten– Article 3b of the casino policy has been adjusted to allow hotels to obtain a casino license before they have the required 200 rooms. New regulations approved by the Executive Council on August 31, 2010 and published Thursday allow for them to receive the license once the sufficiently prove that they will have 200 rooms or more.

The new requirements are that the hotel must have a building permit for the construction of the additional rooms; they must also prove that all the financing is in place to complete the upgrade/expansion of the facility is in place and that 130 of the required 200 rooms (65 percent) are completed. Hotels are also required to be open or commit to reopening.

The full text of the amendment can be found on the government’s website: or requested from the Department of Records and Information Management (formerly known as General Affairs) at the government administration building.
