St. Maarten – Director of the St. Maarten Medical Dr. George Scot and Giovanni Frans of Foundation Maria Daal, which operates the hospital in Bonaire, signed a declaration of intent on Wednesday morning that will lead to a full-fledged cooperation agreement within three months. St. Maarten’s Minister of Public Health, Social Development and Labor Cornelius de Weever and Dutch Minister of Public Health Edith Schippers both witnessed the signing after a meeting with the hospital’s management and board and a tour of the hospital.

The eventual cooperation agreement will regulate the sharing of specialists and support for each other. The St. Maarten Medical Center will use the agreement to access specialists from the VUmc and AMC hospitals in Amsterdam. That cooperation will cease at the moment the St. Maarten Medical Center has acquired its own specialists.
“This is a guarantee for the quality of care and will allow us to have replacements for key specialists. For example if something happens to our anesthesiologist, we will have the ability to get support and assistance that is channeled through Foundation Maria Daal. Once we get our own specialists Foundation Maria Daal will serve more as a support,” Scot said.
Frans said, “We’re working to create new structures to provide hospital care. Because of our small scale we have to work together to set up and build hospital care to the Dutch level. We will work hard to show how we can improve hospital care.”

The latter statement resounded with Schippers who said, “The real work begins now and it must be a smart partnership. This is important not just for treatment, but also for the exchange of specialist knowledge that will occur as a result of the agreement.”
