HMS Johan de Witt ready for any emergency response

POSTED: 09/9/11 1:50 PM

GREAT BAY, St. Maarten – The navy transport vessel ship HMS Johan de Witt will arrive and depart from St. Maarten today. The naval ship will be welcomed with an honor salute from Fort Amsterdam at 8:40 a.m.
The ship was originally planned to stay longer, but will depart early to sea for any emergency response due to the passage of tropical storm Maria. The early departure means the planned courtesy visits to Governor of St. Maarten drs Eugene Holiday and Prime Minister Sarah Wescot-Williams will be cancelled.
Since June of this year, the De Witt is the West Indian Guard Ship in the Caribbean. Based in Curacao, it takes part in the fight against drugs and human trafficking, and it also offers the Kingdom’s islands assistance during extreme bad weather.
