St. Maarten – Vice Prime Minister Theodore Heyliger wished the island’s Chinese community a “very happy new year” Sunday. Chinese New Year is an annual “spring” festival that is welcomed by Chinese all over the world. The Dragon, which is a symbol of power and good fortune, is the celebrated figure this New Year.

“I would like to wish the Chinese community in Sint Maarten, China and around the world a very happy Chinese New Year. May this feast bring about happiness and joy for you and your families. I hope that the year of the Dragon will bring you and your family good fortune.  Wishing you all a joy-filled Chinese New Year,” Heyliger said on Sunday.

The celebrations officially begin today and will continue for 15 days.
