POSTED: 06/4/12 1:45 PM

St. Maarten – The department of community development and the health department of the Foundation of Seventh Day Adventist Churches begin a series of healthy cooking demonstrations tonight. The classes, which will be facilitated by Sabine Lake-Flanders, will take place on Mondays and Thursdays in the month of June from 6:30 p.m. – 8:30 p.m. at the Rupert I. Maynard Youth and Community Center.
The focus of the workshop will be on how individuals can incorporate the eight laws of health in their lives: pure air, sunlight, abstemiousness, rest, exercise, proper diet, the use of water and trust. Instructors will share different ways of preparing traditional dishes in a healthy manner. There will also be less familiar ingredients such as quinoa, millet, barley, spelt, amaranth and more. Information will also be provided on health related topics.
In week 1 of the course participants will learn to make fruit pancakes, baked oat loaf, baked rice loaf, apple stew, fruit jams, granola, seed milk and zwie-back bread. In week two they’ll learn about sandwich spreads, pesto, firm cheese, macaroni & cheese, quiches, salad dressing and sauces. Week 3 will focus on meat substitutes, meat balls, croquette, lasagna, sauerkraut and soups and week 4 will feature information on desserts, sprouting, cookies, no bake crusts and pies. All recipes will be plant based.
The dates for the healthy cooking demonstrations are June 4, 7, 11, 14, 18, 21, 25, 28 at the St. Peters Community Center.
