St. Maarten – Chief Executive Officer of the St. Maarten Harbour Group of Companies Mark Mingo has announced the company will be seeking International Organization for Standardization (ISO) 9000 certification and that he wants to make Dr. A.C. Wathey Cruise and Cargo Facilities the region’s first “green harbour”. The announcements were made in a statement Mingo issued Monday.

Standards

ISO 9000 is a set of standards for quality management systems. It helps organizations ensure they meet the needs of customers and other stakeholders.  Cruise lines calling at St. Maarten are ISO 9000 certificated and countries like Bermuda that offer ship’s registry are also ISO 9000 certified. If the Harbour Group’s efforts succeed it will become the first government owned company to have this distinction.

Mingo will be furthering the harbour group’s efforts on this front by attending the 20th annual International Conference on ISO 9000 and Quality Management Service (QMS). The conference will take place at the Hyatt Regency Grand Cypress in Orlando, Florida from February 26 to February 28. The annual meeting mixes presentations by corporate executives and management system experts, sector-specific implementation updates, general management system topics and integrating management systems.

Green port

The goal to become a green port means the harbour group will have to, amongst other things, invest in using alternative energy, streamline activities and create a paperless administration.

“We at the harbour are innovators. St. Maarten has been an innovator in the cruise sector; an example that many others are working to follow. All our destination needs is for all who live here and benefit to do their part and be innovative,” Mingo said.
