GREAT BAY-Minister of Public Health Cornelius De Weever met last Friday with the New York Executive Committee of the Association of Haitian Physicians Abroad (AMHE) who was here on a site visit, because they are planning to host their 2013 convention on the island.

“I am very pleased that this group of physicians has considered St. Maarten for their next convention, and we are looking forward to partnering with them in various areas,” Minister de Weever said, adding that the group’s visit can be seen as another form of medical or health tourism, as the island tries to attract these types of events to our shores during the off-season.

The group of physicians was on the island from September 14to September 16 with their main aim being to scout venues as well as meet local government officials and community-based organizations in preparation for their 2013 Convention.  All of the medical professionals are currently practicing in the State of New York.

The 2013 Convention will host approximately 200 physicians along with their families. The delegation comprised a neurologist, gastroenterologist, internist and pediatricians. The group further stated during their meeting with the minister that they want to engage the local health care industry as much as possible, and it is their desire to not only engage with the Haitian Community but also the entire St. Maarten community at large.
