St. Maarten—Two armed gunmen attempted to rob a tourist couple yesterday in the Beacon Hill area, but their attempt was foiled and they made their getaway in a small white car.

A police report from Inspector Ricardo Henson states that “at approximately 12.15 a.m. a police patrol from the Simpson Bay area was sent to Dunes Casino in Beacon Hill to investigate an attempted armed robbery. On the scene the investigating officers spoke to the victim who was bleeding from a wound to his head. The victim stated that he and his female companion had just left the Atlantis Casino to go to their room at the Caravanserai Hotel. When reaching the hotel premises they were attacked by two unknown men who stepped out of a small white car and attempted to steal his companion’s bag.

Both would be robbers were armed with a handgun. The victim told police that he attempted to defend his companion and in doing so one of the suspects struck him in his head with the gun. Realizing that their attempt to relieve the couple of their possessions was unsuccessful, the suspects “stepped back into the small white car and drove off.” The victim was treated on the scene by paramedics and then taken to the St. Maarten Medical Center for further treatment. The Special Robbery Unit is investigating this case. The Unit is also said to be investigating a number of other recent robberies and attempted robberies that have taken place on the island, many of them at casinos. In many of these cases the suspects are said to have been dressed in black and made their getaway in “a small white car.”
