St. Maarten – With a brief ceremony in Ebenezer opposite to the Sol gas station, the government kicked off the seven-week project to install a new sewage line in the district. Prime Minister Sarah Wescot-Williams, Vromi Minister Theo Heyliger and Public Health and Labor Minister Cornelius de Weever attended the event.

The first phase involves breaking open the road on the right hand side from the Sol gas station towards the Dollar-store at the beginning of the L.B. Scot road. Contractor Windward Roads will work two shifts during a six to seven week period to make sure that the work is finished on August 14, by the time the new school year begins.

The second phase of the project will bring the sewage line along the Zagersgut Road towards the expanded waste water treatment plan on Illidge Road, but this work will be done next year.

Minister Heyliger said the project will bring major improvements to the sewage system in the district and that it will create a healthier environment. “The past couple of weeks we have made a substantial number of investments,” the minister noted.

Minister De Weever said that the project is “another step in the right direction. It will improve the quality of life for all St. Maarteners.”
