Curacao — Governor Frits Goedgedrag has formally submitted his resignation to Queen Beatrix. He cites health problems as the main reason. Governor Goedgedrag is undergoing treatment for a heart condition since last year. He was absent for several months for overseas treatment in Holland. When he returned to the island he was confronted with constant critique from coalition partners. When the coalition fell apart, leaders visited the Governor late at night to dissolve parliament and call new elections, which he signed. The morning after opposition partners were unable to form a new coalition that asked for the establishment of an interim cabinet. Goedgedrag went along and faced renewed criticism for this decision shortly afterwards he left the island again for medical treatment.
Upon his return this week it was announced that he had submitted his resignation. Acting Governor Adèle van der Pluim-Vrede will hold the function until the Queen appoints a new Governor. Goedgedrag (1951) is the first Governor of country Curacao, since 2010. Before that he was the Governor of the former Netherlands Antilles from 2002 to 2010 and Lt. Governor in Bonaire from 1992 to 1998.
