Gibson Sr. officially nominated for Cft’s Board

St. Maarten – Prime Minister Sarah Wescot-Williams has sent a letter withdrawing Michel Soon’s nomination to the board of the Committee on Financial Supervision (Cft) and proposing Richard Gibson Sr. instead. The government’s intention to do this was first announced in the budget meeting on June 29.

The government withdrew Soons as a candidate because of the unofficial remarks they have heard about why Minister of Kingdom Relations Piet Hein Donner has yet to table the nomination in the Kingdom Council of Ministers. Those comments which have been summed up as “considerable objections” include an erroneous belief that Soons does not reside on St. Maarten and that he sits on the Supervisory Board of Directors of the Harbor Group of Companies. The government indicates in its letter that Soons was willing to resign.

Donner has refused to publicly state why the proposal has not been tabled. On his last visit – June 21 – he told the Council of Ministers he would send a written response detailing why he had not made the proposal.
