Gebe goes after electricity thieves

POSTED: 05/29/12 1:19 PM

St. Maarten – The police have arrested, questioned and released an unstated amount of people for tampering with electricity meters issued by utility provider Gebe. It is illegal to tamper with meters.
The arrests are part of sustained controls that are being collaboratively done by the utility company, the Ministry of Housing, Physical Planning, Infrastructure and Environment (Vromi) and the police. Gebe was the one to initiate the action because individuals and businesses have been tampering with meters so they don’t register the correct amount of electricity usage.
The role of the Vromi ministry is inspecting the connection(s). If the connection complies with the regulations but inspectors spot tampering Gebe will file a complaint with the police before the file is handed over to the Office of the Public Prosecutor for prosecution.
