St. Maarten – The Court in First Instance sentenced Bertran Martin Blackman, 59, in absentia to 6 months imprisonment for an attempt to break into the Sol gas station in Madame Estate on September 23 of last year.

The defendant was caught red-handed and he spent 26 days in detention before he was sent away due to the lack of cell capacity. He was then handed over to immigration and subsequently deported to his native Trinidad.

Blackman told detectives that he wanted to burglarize the gas station to get cigarettes, soft drinks and money. In a toilet that is accessible from the outside, he made a big hole in a wall using a car jack as a tool. The damage to the building was extensive but the defendant did not manager to steal anything before the police arrived.

Prosecutor mr. Bart den Hartigh demanded 6 months imprisonment with deduction of the time already served and Judge mr. Monique Keppels sentenced the hapless burglar accordingly.
