St. Maarten – In a car accident yesterday morning around 5.10 a.m., the driver died and a passenger was injured. Both victims are French male tourists, identified by police as D.R.P. and S.Q.V. The car was heading in the direction of Oyster Pond when the driver lost control over the car at the entrance of Rice Hills Gardens whereby the occupants remained stuck in the wreck.

Police patrols, ambulance and the Fire Department rushed to the scene. On the scene the driver, whose condition seemed to be extremely serious, was removed from the vehicle. The Fire Department used a metal cutting machine to free the passenger.

The investigation by the Traffic Department and statements from witnesses indicate that driving at high speed and losing control of the vehicle was the cause of this accident. The victims with initials D.R.P. and S.Q.V. are both French nationals visiting the island. They were treated on the spot and then brought to the St. Maarten Medical Center for further treatment.

Later in the morning the traffic department learnt from the medical center that the driver of the car died as a result of the injuries he sustained. The other passenger was flown to Martinique for further medical treatment because of his serious condition.
