St. Martin – “The French side of the island can remain competitive as a major regional tourist destination with innovative and smart projects involving young people, tradition and culture.” This was the general consensus after a delegation from the St. Martin Tourist Office participated in the Caribbean Tourism Organization’s (CTO) State of the Industry Conference in St. Kitts and Nevis

The conference was held from October 10 to 12 under the theme Developing A Winning Tourism Strategy.

St. Martin was represented by President of the Collectivité Alain Richardson, Director of the French Tourism Office Silviane John, Gregoire Dumel-regional marketing representative, Jelani Fleming as the Junior Tourism Minister and her chaperone Evelyne Fleming as well as students Jessie Piper and Shaïna Galvani and former Junior Minister 2011-2012, Hannifah Hunt. The young people, in particular, attended the conference’s annual Youth Congress where Jelani Fleming debated on tourism issues.

Director of the French Tourism Office Silviane John said that “The Networking opportunities at the State of the Industry Conference with airlines managers, sustainable experts and other tourism stakeholders was a great building mechanism in creating partnership. The discussion topics presented were challenging us to expand and develop our ideas and methods into real solutions.”

The regional marketing representative for the French tourist office Gregoire Dumel indicated that the conference was intense and offered suggestions for sustainable development.

“It was a great experience on a personal and professional level. This conference was really intense with all the different workshop and general sessions. The Caribbean is indeed the number one destination in the world and we need, as St Martin people, to identify our product and consolidate it. Today more than ever we should all think about sustainable project for our people, our tourism and children,” Dumel stated.

Two topics that particularly impressed the delegation were The Right Product, the Right Message, the Right Time and Social vs. Traditional Media – who is getting the Message?

The CTO State of the Industry Conference is the CTO annual convocation where Caribbean practitioners, policy makers and strategic partners, at the highest levels, gather to discuss issues, identify solutions and generally develop courses of action that will benefit the tourism industry in the Caribbean.
