St. Maarten – The Generation New Status Band has plans to take a group to Walt Disney World, in Orlando Florida during the month of October. To make that trip possible, they have embarked on a fund raising drive, an effort which is expected to intensify in the coming months.

The trip will take place during the midterm break in October, but the effort to raise the much needed funds began last year, the first in October and the second in the month of December and both were hailed as a success. “We still have a long way to go in raising funds to be able to take them to Disney World and we have more events to organize in the coming months,” said Urmain Durmoy, founder of the Gnsstm.

The Cocaae fondation, which runs Generation New Status Band, St Maarten will be utilizing the Board Walk on a weekly basis to raise funds. But Durmoy also sees this effort as a move to stimulate the children. “This is also a way of showing the children that it is necessary for them to work for what they want to achieve in life,” he said.

Ironically, the presence of the Gnsstm on a regular basis will add a cultural touch to the city, especially the Board Walk, which is frequented by visitors as well as residents. But the efforts of the group will not be successful without the input from the general public.

The ages of the children involved in the group is between five and 16, presently the group has a membership of 70 with the potential to grow. “This band is not only about drumming, it’s also about discipline and responsibility, these are some of the things we try to instill into the children as their minds are so caught up in all the negative vices that is portrayed here,” he concluded.
