St. Maarten – The Foundation Excellence Judicial Course is inviting all people interested in becoming a Legal Assistant to visit them at the Job Fair that will be held at the Belair Community Center on November 4. They will also hold an information session at the John Larmonie Center between 7:00 p.m. and 9:00 p.m. on November 5.

The foundation wants to use both encounters to weigh the interest in its self study course that is already running in Curacao. The course is a theoretical self study program that lasts for two years. Students take evening classes two times per week that cover a variety of modules taught by judges, prosecutors, jurists working at private entities, lecturers that are part of the teaching staff at the University of Curacao and other professionals. The specific modules are legal skills, introduction to law, constitutional law, organization of the judicial system, language domination, administrative law, criminal law, the law of criminal procedure, family law and law of inheritance, company law, property law and law of obligations, an optional subject (employment law or tax law and/or insurance law). Anyone who has completed a HAVO or a MBO diploma meets the entry requirements for the course.

People who complete the course will get a diploma that allows them to follow additional training at a university or work at a notary’s office or law firm, banking institutions, offshore companies and (semi) governmental institutions. They can also follow a 3-month course in legal techniques that gives practical insight on the theoretical knowledge they obtain and to provide legal advice.
