St. Maarten – Nevillon Forde, a student at the St. Maarten Academy, is the winner of this year’s speech competition organized by JCI St. Maarten. She now travels to Curacao to represent St. Maarten in the National Speech Competition, which will be held between October 13 and October 15.
“I am very overwhelmed to be the winner as it was my first attempt at a speech competition. JCI is doing a great job, keep it up,” Forde said in reaction to her win.
Students from Learning Unlimited, St. Maarten Academy, Milton Peters College, Caribbean International Academy (CIA) and St. Dominic participated in this year’s speech competition. Each person had to give remarks on the theme “Be the change you want to see in the world.” Organizers said the judges had an extraordinary task as all the contestants were “well prepared” and full of confidence. With the scores tallied Forde had the edge, followed by Hesroy Philbert of Learning Unlimited in second place and Kiran Jivani of St. Dominic High in third place.
“JCI St. Maarten would like to thank the contestants, parents for their support, everyone who came out on Sunday to support the youths and who gave a helping hand to make this event possible. JCI St. Maarten would like to send a special thank you to Gulf Insurance Limited, Travel Planners, First Caribbean Int’l Bank, Office World, UTS and Telem Group of Companies,” JCI St. Maarten’s President Lionel Lawrence said.
