St. Maarten -“Protect Your family Against Fire. The Time to Act is Now,” is the theme of the 2012 observance of fire prevention week. Activities will be held from October 15 to October 20 in observance of the global week, all of which are being organized by the Fire Department and Friends of the Island Government Fire Fighters (FIGFF) association.

During this week we will organize different activities such as a school competition, lectures in community centers and an open house. The school competitions will be a drawing competition for the primary schools and the secondary schools will have to create a slogan, or a jingle or a video clip which will be used to raise fire safety awareness on St.Maarten,” Section Head of Prevention, Preparation, Education and Training, officer Silvanico Pauletta said.

The lectures in the community centers will inform the public on what to do in the event of a fire and the proper use of a fire extinguisher. The Philipsburg Cultural Centre, Allen Halley Center-Simpson Bay, Carl and Son’s Conference Room, St. Peters Community Center and Dutch Quarter Community Center are all venues that will be utilized from October 15 to October 19 for the lecturers.

However on October 20, there will be an open house at the Clem Labega Square where companies who offer products or services related to fire safety will be able to display them.

The Fire Department is inviting all businesses and organizations that are interested in taking part in the open house to contact Kirk Richardson at 543-1316 or Antonio Gibs at 543-1318.
