St. Maarten (DCOMM) – The Fire Prevention Week 2011 begins today. Friends of the Island Government Fire Fighters and the Fire Department Section Fire Prevention are organizing the event. This year’s theme is Protect your family against fire. The time to act is now.

“The theme for this fire prevention week is on the mark. There are indeed simple measures that can be taken to prevent a potential devastating fire from occurring in our homes,” Prime Minister Sarah Wescot-Williams said yesterday. “The week is designed to inform the public and make sure they are educated about fire hazards and prevention. It’s about safety and life, first and foremost. Our country’s Fire Department is committed to help educate people.”

“An ounce of prevention can save lives, and protect our homes and everything we hold dear. It is the responsibility of every Sint Maartener to educate themselves on simple fire prevention measures. I wish staff of the fire department much success with their fire prevention week,” said Wescot-Williams, who as Minister of General Affairs is responsible for the
Fire Department.

Activities include a school competition, lectures, information sessions and an open house.

The activities for the week are as follows. Monday-Radio Interviews; Tuesday-Lecture Architects; Wednesday-School Information Sessions; Thursday-Lecture Day Care Centres; Friday-School Information Sessions; and Saturday-Open House at Fire Department in Cay Hill 8.00am – 5.00pm. All activities take place at the department in Cay Hill including the announcement of the winner of the school competition on Saturday.
