St. Maarten —The many safety tips given by the fire department appears to have been taken to heart as no incident of fire was reported during the Christmas and New Year season, deputy fire chief Silvanico Pauletta  said yesterday.

The deputy fire chief thanked the local public for adhering to the safety tips and allowing “an incident free transition into the New Year.” He noted that accidents are prone to occur at anytime of the year and as such he believes it is commendable that no calls were received during the holidays with reports of fires.  Pauletta is optimistic that this indicates that the public has become more aware of safety requirements and are exercising caution.

He reported that inspections were carried out by members of the fire department prior to the fireworks displays and the point of sale of fireworks and it appears that everyone adhered to the set regulations governing the use of fireworks. In the weeks leading up to the Christmas and New Year celebration, the fire department as well as the Collective Preventative Services issued a number of safety tips on preventing fires  as well as provided a list of Do’s and Don’ts.

“I want to thank the public for their cooperation and for doing their part to keep the island safe,” Pauletta concluded.
