St. Maarten – The 6th annual culinary festival Fête de la Cuisine for food lovers returns on November 4 and will end on St. Maarten Day, November 11.

St. Maarten is often referred to as the gastronomic center of the Caribbean. The island counts more than 100 nationalities and this mix of cultures from all over the world is reflected in the cuisine of the numerous restaurants on the island.

According to its organizers, “the dine around program of Fete de la Cuisine 2012 is a sequence of pure culinary delight. The program includes visits to two emerging restaurants on the island, namely Fusion in Simpson Bay on Saturday November 3and Canao in Oyster Bay on Thursday November 8. Chef Raymond of Ocean Lounge restaurant in Holland House will prepare a special opening dinner for Fête de la Cuisine on Monday November 5.   A dining trip to Grand Case, the culinary center of St. Martin on Tuesday November 6 is also part of the program. This former fishing village has more than 100 restaurants, where the lovers of haute cuisine can have a ball.”
The uniqueness of Fête de la Cuisine is the cooperation with the Alliance Gastronomique, the oldest association of chefs in Europe, with members in the Netherlands and Belgium.  Under the leadership of Gerrit Greveling, president of the Alliance, 6 chefs will visit the island.

This delegation consists of Onno Kokmeijer of the prestigious restaurant Ciel Bleu Hotel Okura in Amsterdam, one of the leading hotels in the world. Onno Kokmeijer is one of the few 2 star Michelin chefs in the Netherlands.  Geert-Jan Vaartjes, chef of Restaurant Lords of Harinxma located at Bilderberg Lauswolt estate in Beetsterzwaag, Friesland and chef Peter Postma of Kaatje restaurant in Sluis, in Blokzijl are also part of the group. Two foreign chefs complete the list; the Belgian chef Karel Wens of restaurant the Pastorie Lichtaart / Kasterlee and Jean-Jacques Menanteau, the former head chef of Hotel L’Europe in Amsterdam and presently ambassador for the AG.

The Alliance team adds a super culinary touch to the Fête de la Cuisine with performances in wine temple Bacchus in Hope Estate on the French side, where the chefs will prepare a lunch on Tuesday November 6 and in the resident hotel of our culinary festival, the Holland House Hotel in Philipsburg on Friday November 9.

On Wednesday November 8 the Bella Italia event will take place at Porto Cupecoy in the Lowlands. This event is designed to give the visitor “A touch of Italy”. The square in Porto Cupecoy will be transformed into cozy Italian ambiance, with fashion, pottery, paintings, jewelry, music, tastings of fine foods and wine. The chefs of restaurants Izy, Sopranos and Rendez Vous Lounge will prepare a 4 course dinner from their country of origin paired with Italian wines from importer Mixitalia in Orange Grove.

Fête de la Cuisine ends with a beach party at Karakter in Simpson Bay on Saturday November 10. Live music and fun activities are part of the program. There will be a contest for Mr. and Mrs. Karakter 2012.
