St. Maarten – Several glowing tributes were made during the private viewing and thanks giving service, at the Royal Funeral Home for Mark Anthony Reid Jr, who was born on January 28, 2013 and died by tragic circumstances on April 2 in Middle Region.

But only a hand full of those that attended the service had an opportunity to view the earthly remains. Reid Sr was among the first to stand over the tiny white coffin which was covered with flowers.

The pale face of the child was visible through a small glass covered opening. Reid Sr was constantly brushing a few imaginary specks of dust from the glass, it was as if he wanted to stroke his son’s cheeks for the last time.

The scenario however was too hard for Morgan who sat down several rows from the front and had to be consoled. When she was finally persuaded to file pass the coffin, she resisted at first and as if she was in a trance, she walked dejectedly towards the front of the isle.

“I can’t do that, I can’t do that, “she repeated while sobbing uncontrollably, but after a quick glance, she broke down and had to be removed. As ironic as it may sound, it was Pastor Jannett Farquharson, the grand mother of the child that read the opening sentences at the beginning of the service and that was followed by a prayer by Pastor Jermain Farquharson, the grandfather.

However none of those tributes had a stronger message than the one made by Mark Reid Sr, when he said he would trade his position for that of his dead son. Both Reid Sr, who is employed at Sheriff Security and the mother of the infant, Latoya Morgan who works at the Oyster Bay Resort are originally from Jamaica.

“You are once, twice, three times an angel and I love you. I love you in life and now in death,” Reid Sr said during his moving speech to the congregation. Veronica Hassell, the eldest sister of the dead infant had to be consoled after a tearful musical tribute.

But the words of one sympathizer will forever remain on the mind of Morgan when she was told to ‘do the right thing, if she wanted to see her son again because he is with God now. Another urged the congregation to thank God for life, when he glanced down at the tiny coffin.

Among those that turned up to pay their respects and sympathize with the bereaved parents and relatives were coworkers of Morgan, Reid Sr, class mates of Hassell, the eldest sister of Mark Jr, who attends the Sundial School and a representative of the Middle Region Community Council. Also in attendance were many relatives and friends of both parents. The funeral will take place this Friday at the Cul De Sac Cemetery after a funeral service which will start at 10 a.m.
