Extreme heat and drought cause two brush fires in French side

POSTED: 09/17/12 1:39 PM

ORIENT BAY – A large brush fire near the turnoff from the Route Nationale 7 to Le Galion and Club Orient on the French side of the island threw a thick blanket of smoke over the road for hours and destroyed a large part of greenery. The fire brigade was on the spot to fight the flames. It was the second brush fire in two days. On Saturday the French side fire department had to tend to a smaller fire along the RN 7 opposite the airport in Grand Case.
The extreme heat and the continuing drought are possible causes of the two fires.

The fire on the Route de Gallions was not due to extreme heat. It was deliberately lit.. there is a permit to construct there with SNC Virtus and that is the same name at Le SHORE in Baie Nettle. Yesterday as we were going to work there was another fire. We called the pompiers and the gendarmes and it was lucky we did as that fire could have been worse. it was ready to jump the road. I told the Gendarmes we had seen the fire last weekend start and where and it was deliberately lit.. he replied.. we know..
