Explosion causes island wide outage

St. Maarten – An explosion in a high tension room on Front Street led to a power outage in all of Dutch St. Maarten on Sunday morning. The explosion took place shortly after staffers began a scheduled upgrading to the company’s distribution network.

The improvements were being done to the network sector that runs down Front Street from Sea Palace to the Cannegieter Building and from Harbour View Restaurant to Caribbean Blend. The company was able to begin returning power to some areas by 11:00 a.m. with others being switched back on as the day continued.

There were mixed reactions to the outage on utility provider NV GEBE’s Facebook page with some thanking the company for posting the information and others angrily asking for updates when power restoration time frames the company had given had elapsed. One angry customer – Ramin Berwers – vented his frustration by stating, “Time NOT to pay the bill this month. Power outage too much last and this month.”
