GREAT BAY– A consultant from Jamaica Dr. Wayne Myrie is currently on the island carrying out an assessment to look at some of the iconic palm trees that might be infected.

This inspection will be done on behalf of the Inspection Department of Economic Affairs.

One of the palm tree diseases common in the Caribbean is Lethal Yellowing.  This is caused by a phyto-plasma, a bacteria-like organism, and spread by an insect, the plant hopper (Myndus crudus).

Dr. Myrie who is on a one week visit will meet with different groups and take samples which will be tested to determine the type of pest.  He carried out some neighborhood visits last weekend.
