Ex-wife calls on community for help: Union stalwart Haize returned to St. Maarten unexpectedly

St. Maarten – Former union-leader Willy Haize was flown back from the Dominican Republic to St. Maarten yesterday for reasons that have mystified and upset his ex-wife Shuhua Zhang. She learned about Haize’s return through parliamentarian Hyacinth Richardson. “I did not hear anything from Mr. Eric, the man who accompanied my ex-husband to the Dominican Republic,” Mrs. Zhang told this newspaper yesterday evening.

Haize suffered a stroke last weekend and was flown for treatment to the Dominican Republic on Tuesday. After his return to St. Maarten yesterday, he was put up in the emergency room, Mrs. Zhang said. “This is a horrifying treatment for a man who was a pioneer in the fight for the right of the workers in St. Maarten,” she said. “He should not be in an emergency room, he has to be treated. They can cure him in the Dominican Republic. I want to ask the community for help, so that he can return to the Dominican Republic for treatment. They have good doctors over there.”

An emotional Mrs. Zhang said that one of Haize’s sons is living in the Dominican Republic. She is asking the community for donations to make the return to Santo Domingo possible for the founder of the United Federation of the Windward Islands union possible.

Readers willing to help can contact Mrs. Zhang on 581 53 88.
