St. Maarten News – Former students from St. Maarten who received study financing through the Dienst Uitvoering Onderwijs (Duo) in the Netherlands have a combined outstanding debt of €25 million ($28.5 million, or 51 million guilders). Duo-spokeswoman Thea Jonkman confirmed the amount to this newspaper yesterday. The total debt is spread over approximately 1,000 former students, putting the average debt at $28,500.

On March 31, Duo reached out to the indebted former students with an offer for a personal payment scheme. Ex-students have until May 1 to submit their current address and phone number to Duo; in doing so they may qualify for a payment arrangement.

Ex-students who fail to sub it their information will not qualify and expose themselves to charges related to a collection agency.

Duo said at the end of last month that it is using all the means it has at its disposal to locate the missing debtors from St. Maarten.
