GREAT BAY / THE HAGUE – The first annual Unity Movement Day will be the second initiative of the Stichting Soualiga Foundation (SSF) since its formation in the Netherlands. The event has been scheduled for October 6 and according to the organizers is meant to be a fun and informal pre-St.Maarten Day celebration.

The foundation itself was formed to bring St. Maarteners together to socialize and properly integrate into the Dutch society.

“One of the things that we found out from the research that we carried out with the SSF Student Forum in April is that some St. Maarten students have trouble integrating in Dutch society. Unfortunately, this can sometimes negatively affect their academic performance and general development. We want to be there for our fellow St. Maarteners, and this is just one of the many initiatives we have planned to let them know that we are here for them,” SSF chairman Perry Geerlings said.

The ‘Sportshal Oranjeplein’ in The Hague begins at 10:00 am with sporting activities such as basketball, volleyball and football all day long. However at 5:00 pm the event will transition into a networking session.

“Sports is something that young people from St. Maarten love and we thought that we should create an opportunity for them to play and to get together with other people from home,” SSF board member and organizing committee chairman Garrick Richardson said. “But even the people that are not on a team are more than welcome to come and support. We have good music and plenty of local food and drink, so we know that everyone will have a good time,” he continued.

The SSF said that it is extremely grateful for the support of other St. Maarten organizations in the Netherlands, particularly the leaders and members of Stichting Unified Sint Maarten Connection. “They have demonstrated their alliance to SSF’s goal of being a haven for all St. Maarteners in the Netherlands by collaborating with the foundation in their second initiative,” the foundation noted.
