GREAT BAY – The Council of Ministers has approved a change to the civil code that will offer protection to employees of companies that are sold to a new owner. Labor Minister Cornelius de Weever said yesterday in answer to a question by independent MP Romain Laville that the motion the MP table in April for this purpose “did not sink.”

On the contrary, the motion is now at the Ministry of Justice for final consideration.

Laville tabled the motion during the budget debate in April after employees of the former Pelican Resort in Simpson B ay lost their jobs when the company was sold to a new owner.

Laville asked in his motion to add an article to the civil code in accordance with an article from the Dutch civil code that regulates the rights of employees in case of the transfer of a company to a new owner.
