Elshot concerned about higher pension premiums

St. Maarten – An increase in pension fund premiums between three and five guilders is manageable, Windward Islands Teachers Union president Claire Elshot says. The union-leader is concerned about the effect higher pensions may have on the premium the fund will require from employees.

The government has announced that the pension will go up to 1,000 guilders per month early next year.

Elshot says that the minimum wage has not been increased during the past four years, though there are indications that the government is considering an adjustment.

With the current minimum wage workers are unable to make ends meet, Elshot pointed out. Together with plans to increase the retirement age to 62, this is one of the worrisome social issues the unions are facing.
