The initiative by the St. Maarten’s Lion’s Club to have the powers that be increase the legal drinking age from 16 to 21 is a positive one. Their expressed willingness to compromise on this and accept at the very least 18 years as the legal drinking age is also noteworthy. A lot of studies have been done on the effects of alcohol on the unformed brain and the community and government would be wise to pay attention to these and throw their weight behind the initiative of the club to curb the drinking that goes on among the younger population. While it is all well and good to pay lip service to the issues that affect the youth in the community, it is more important to step up and make the decisions that will in the long run protect them from themselves. Increasing the legal drinking age from 16 is an opportunity to do just this.
