The word visitation has an ominous feel, and we understand that the police force was initially not to happy to become the subject of such an exercise.

Now that the work is complete and the report is there, everybody is happy. The visitation committee concludes that the police force is moving in the right direction, without saying that everything is now perfect.

There is work to be done. The committee’s report contains eight recommendations and Justice Minister Dennis Richardson said yesterday that he embraces them all and that they have his full support.

Maybe the most interesting recommendation is to broaden the mandate for Chief Commissioner De Witte. This will enable the force to take decisions fast when the situation requires this, and it will enable the police to deliver a better product to the citizens it serves.
