Matthijs Voortman’s interview with convicted killer Joran van der Sloot sheds at last some light on the personality of the man who singlehandedly dealt a heavy blow to Aruba’s image in the world, and who caused immeasurable sorrow to the families of his victims.

A gambling addict who did everything for money and who now says that he feels sick of himself because of what he did does not have a lot of credibility. As the experienced liar that he is, Van der Sloot also has an answer for that perception: he has nothing more to win. And oh, yes, he wants to get married and when he gets out of prison he wants to help gambling-addicted youngsters.

The killer claims that he has become a better human being. That is rather presumptuous. With his history, Van der Sloot is the last one to judge his own state of mind – he should leave that up to the families of Natalee Holloway and Stephany Flores.
