The University of St. Martin (USM) seems to be heading in the right direction with its current degree program arrangement with Monroe College and the Study Financing Department. For too long, USM hobbled along, crippled by both bad internal decisions in the past, like scrapping its connection to Johnson & Wales University, and lukewarm support at best, bordering on outright neglect by successive governments. As a result, the university faced bankruptcy several times.

This is a pity, because over the past 2 decades the institution could have blossomed into what the National Institute for Professional Advancement (NIPA) is now. But it’s no use crying over spilled milk.

The important thing is that USM is growing and offering local students an affordable option to a quality higher education in much needed fields like technology and hospitality management.

It is important that education flourishes on St. Maarten, especially since its new political status that affords the country greater autonomy and room for growth. What is needed is to update legislation formally recognizing USM so that successive Ministers of Education can allocate a portion of their budget toward improving and expanding the university.
