Kingdom Relations Minister Plasterk seems to have to yardsticks: one for St. Maarten and Curacao, and one for the Dutch public entities Bonaire, Saba and Statia.

While Bonaire is engaged in a political controversy that makes St. Maarten look like Disney World, Plasterk told the Second Chamber that he is not concerned about the situation and that media reports might not accurately represent the facts.

In June, the minister already told senators in the First Chamber that he is more concerned about integrity issues in St. Maarten and Curacao than he is about the shenanigans in Bonaire.

All this, while two political heavyweights in Bonaire will find themselves soon in criminal court and while another politician has just signed a conditional dismissal with the prosecutor’s office for forgery and fraud.

There is no denying that St. Maarten has its own integrity issues, but why they should be more reason for concern than the political Wild West in Bonaire is a mystery to us.
