Most of the crime committed on the island is by males, specifically young males. The initiative to intervene in the lives of socially vulnerable youth is a good one, and hopefully the fruits of such an initiative will be felt. How effective the program will be, however, remains to be seen. At least it is a step in the right direction.

Already we have seen a decline in the official crime statistics (see pg 1 story), though we cannot say for certain what the underlying causes are. We would hazard a guess that some of the decline had to do with an improving economic climate, and the introduction of community police officers who personally deal with their respective neighborhoods, giving youth there a sense of ownership and purpose.

The big challenge still remains the tough socio-economic conditions emerging on the French side, a recipe for breeding delinquent youth prone to turn to a life of crime. Rehabilitating one side of the island while the other side rots won’t solve the situation. Greater political cooperation is needed.
