Editorial: Too hot to handle

Prime Minister Wescot-Williams declined yesterday to divulge any details about the investigation into irregularities at the National Security Service VDSM. Up to a point that is understandable: this is an extremely sensitive matter that touches the heart of our democratic system.

As long as there are no clear answers, stories about what happened (or might have happened) will start to lead a life of their own and gain credibility in many minds.

It makes sense to be patient but sooner rather than later the community will need to be properly informed.

It is bad enough to see governments fall like dominoes and to experience one political scandal after the other (think for example Bada Bing, Illidge, Shigemoto) but if the one service that is supposed to be the ultimate guard dog of integrity is bogged down by integrity issues of its own, the country is entering a stage that could be too hot to handle.
