Editorial: To catch a thief

Sometimes we read stories about situations in faraway countries that touch a nerve. They make us think: great idea – why don’t we apply that in St. Maarten?
It is an age-old truth that it takes a thief to catch a thief. We have enough of them, even though the latest figure about theft (including burglaries) dates back to 2009. That year there were 1,628 cases, so it is an understatement to say that this form of petty crime affects a lot of citizens.
A police commissioner in Denmark, confronted with a sharp increase in burglaries, decided to approach known burglars for advice about what people ought to do to secure their homes and which type of homes are likely targets.
That sounds like an interesting exercise, one that is easily applicable in our community. Better even, such a query ought to include which types of cars are most wanted among car thieves and what owners could do to keep their vehicles safe.
