It’s been a long struggle, but now it is finally a fact. Minister Franklin Meyers signed the management contract for the Man of War Shoal Marine Park with the Nature Foundation.
It is a landmark event on the road to environmental protection in St. Maarten. The efforts to protect the marine environment started in fourteen years ago, in 1997 when the Nature Foundation was established.
Since that time, the island has experienced spectacular economic growth, and that went often at the expense of the environment.
Now Minister Meyers has expressed his public support for the protection of the environment and that is something environmentalists will be happy with.
We are however pretty sure that this will not make environmental groups complacent. They will keep an eye on every move the government is making and demand on every appropriate occasion that attention is paid to environmental aspects of new developments.
That’s how it should be. In the meantime, we welcome the step in the right direction Minister Meyers sealed with his signature.
The next logical step is obviously …. a total ban on plastic grocery bags.
