Politicians have talked St. Maarten Day after St. Maarten Day about cooperation with the French side of the island, but very little ever came of it. This has caused some politicians to avoid that particular celebration altogether: always the same speeches and no results.

The St. Maarten Aids Foundation, its French-side sister organization Aides and the HIV/Aids Project Team from the Ministry of Public Health have shown that it is possible after all to do meaningful things together.

The Stronger together campaign, an initiative to make HIV testing more accessible for citizens, is such a joint effort. It is a nice example of how both sides of the island are able to work together.

Now we are waiting for other initiatives (for instance in the field of glass recycling) to follow.
