The prosecutor’s office had some good news to report yesterday for more than one reason.

First there is the announcement that the Eric Yuan Sam murder is drawing to a close after the investigation was reopened last month.

The underlying cause for this success is maybe even more important than solving the case itself: residents of Dutch Quarter have started to talk to investigators. They have come forward with the information law enforcement needs to bring the killers to justice.

For decades the police and the prosecutor’s office have had to put up with a population that preferred a root canal to sharing information. The Dutch Quarter residents – at least some of them – have now turned a corner and decided that enough is enough.

It is an example of community involvement that should not go unnoticed because it sends a strong message to those with crime on their minds.
