Editorial: Aren’t politicians supposed to be role models?

The police are opting for a careful approach towards possible violations of the rules for the placement of political campaign material on public roads. It is of course always better to talk things over than to strong-arm citizens into obedience.

Still, one may well wonder why it is necessary at all to point out the obvious to political parties and their leadership while the rules are crisp and clear.

No campaign material on bridges, street furniture like traffic signs, traffic lights and lampposts, and no billboards or other material on or near roundabouts.

How difficult can it be to stick to a few simple rules? Maybe the mistake is that the permit does not contain sanctions. This should however not give political parties the idea that they can break the rules at their convenience.
